Overnight Oats

Hafa Adai!

Overnight oats have kind of been my obsession lately. I have always been curious to try them, especially with all those mason jar Instagram posts and Pintrest boards. I finally decided to try them out this past week and I am in love. Overnight oats are the perfect yummy breakfast, brunch, and midnight snack to go along with a summer Netflix binge. Seriously.

I only tried out one flavour, btw. But I'm still obsessed.

What are overnight oats? Well, according to Katheats, overnight oats are just plain oats that soak up the liquid or flavour it is placed in. The most common recipes include equal parts of raw oatmeal, milk, and yogurt. This mixture is usually refrigerated overnight in either a container or open cup. Flavourings are usually added into the mixture to enhance the overall taste and goodness. If you don't like oatmeal, overnight oats might not be your cup of tea. But hey, it doesn't hurt to try!

The flavour I opted for involved: cocoa powder, over ripe bananas, old fashioned oats, almond milk, and some sugar. I love chocolate and I am the kind of person that can eat dessert for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Without guilt.

I obtained the recipe via Buzzfeed from Dashing Dish. The recipe is called "Brownie Batter Overnight Protein Oatmeal." Doesn't it sound delicious already? I adjusted the recipe somewhat, because I am that kind of person. If there's room for substitutions, I will substitute.

You will need:

1 cup of unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup of mashed overripe bananas
2 tblsp of unsweetened cocoa powder
1/8 tsp of salt
2 tblsp of brown sugar
1+1/4 cup of old fashioned oats

Note: You can get sweetened almond milk and lessen the amount of sugar you put inside the recipe. Also, overripe bananas will contribute to the sweetness of the dish so you won't need as much sugar. I put maybe 1 tblsp of sugar in my own.

I just mixed it all together in a bowl with a spoon. Then, I placed it in a cup and put foil over the top. Placed it in the refrigerator overnight. And I had it for lunch the next day and since I had some leftover I had it for breakfast the following morning. I heated it up in the microwave for about 45 seconds so that it wasn't too cold or too hot. My oatmeal was just right.


It was perfect. I loved it. I would make it again and I love oatmeal. My only problem is that Almond Milk is sorta expensive on Guam ($3.99 for 1 carton), so I guess my next goal is to try and find a cheaper non-dairy milk that I can make at home.
