Capriciosa Flop

Since I wrote this blog, I found out that the tomato sauce has meat stock in it! Grrr!

Every so often, I try a new restaurant for their vegan options. One of my favorites when I used to eat meat was Capriciosa. There are three locations on Guam: Agana Shopping Center, Royal Orchid Hotel, and in north Tumon in the Pacific Breezeway.  We went to the Royal Orchid Capriciosa.

Since I have improved my diet removing refined sugars and most carbohydrates, my blood sugar has stabilized and my mood greatly improved.  Every once in awhile, I return to the foods and restaurants I loved, like Capriciosa's Italian pastas and pizzas.

Unfortunately, there was only four things on the menu for me to eat as a vegan:
Italian Salad (minus meat, cheese) with iceberg and romaine lettuce, black olives, bell pepper, tomato
Margareta Pizza (minus cheese) with tomato and basil
Anchovy, Black Olive, and Garlic Pizza (minus the cheese, anchovy)
Eggplant and Spinach Pasta with Meat Sauce (substitute tomato sauce)

So the meal was less than satisfying. The iceberg lettuce from the salad was brown, hopefully you can see it in the photo.  It had some crisp, but the fact that it was brown and they were still serving it was a total turn off. The tomato was squishy and powdery. Being vegan, I eat mostly vegetables, so they should be fresh. Other than that, the Italian dressing was pretty good on the less than fresh veggies.

The olive and garlic pizza (minus the anchovy) looked like it was incomplete. Sure, remove the cheese because we are vegans, but shouldn't the chef realize that he gave us baked bread with tomato sauce on it? The pizza was improved by putting the wilty iceberg soaked in Italian dressing on top.

However, I would like to say that the restaurant had great atmosphere, as with the other two Capriciosa's on Guam. And the service was great. Our waiter Daryl, was friendly, patient with our vegan requests, and very timely in his service. Additionally, since it was 4 pm, very few restaurants are open at during the hours between lunch and dinner, but Capriciosa's was open for these limbo hours. That's dedication.

But, the thing I enjoyed the most about the restaurant was the view of tumon bay and two lovers' point. The views made my lunch.

After the meal, I carbo crashed... too many carbohydrates digesting rapidly causing me to get sleepy. Will I eat there again? Unlikely, unless they add more options for vegetarians and vegans.

Any suggestions on vegan friendly restaurants or vegan recipes you'd like to share, please send it to me and I'll post it!

Does anyone know if Vitales has vegan options? Are their pasta noodles vegan? Their pepperocini with garlic and olive oil looks delicious.

Capriciosa I heard they use chicken broth for their marinara :S
