I'm a new vegan so I'm still a little confused about breads. Can vegans eat whole wheat or whole grain breads? I think Healthy Hearts Cafe's sandwiches use whole wheat bread, does that mean it's vegan?

Let me welcome you to your new healthy life choices!

To be sure that an item is vegan, I always read the ingredients on the label.

When eating out at places that offer vegan food or are familiar with veganism, it is easiest to ask. Sherry, the owner of Healthy Hearts, is very nice and knowledgable about the products in her foods.

Breads commonly use eggs, milk, or butter in their ingredients, so it best to read the ingredients listed. Breads are most commonly made from wheat, a kind of grain. There are many types of grains in addition to wheat, such as millet, kamut, rye, barley, oats, etc.

The difference between whole wheat and white flour is that the bran, or outer shell, of the grain has been removed in white flour (hence white bread). The bran has B vitamins, fiber, and trace minerals that are healthy for us.

Whole wheat is brown because of the bran. Whole grain refers to many types of grains that still have their bran.

So given the choice between whole wheat or whole grain bread, I would choose whole grain, because the variety of grains offer different nutrients than just from wheat alone.

Hope that answered your question! Please keep asking more questions and meeting new vegans. It is so helpful to have the support of other people when choosing to be a vegan!
