Don't eat at Carmen's for vegan food!

My apologies to the vegan community on Guam. I have just informed that Carmen's is NOT vegan friendly. Even after speaking to the servers and cooks about our specific dietary needs, they failed to inform us that the chips are cooked in LARD and the mole sauce has meat MEAT stock in it.

A gigantic thumbs down for Carmen's.  Please do NOT eat there for vegan food.

What is mole (pronounced 'moe-lay)? It is a savory sauce made from spices, nuts, and chocolate in Mexican cuisine. What Americans think of as mole is actually mole poblano, and it is made on special occasions because it takes a long time to make. Anything made with time and love, not to mention chocolate, will be totally out of this world!

Since I left California, I said goodbye to mole, except now I have found a place that serves mole on island at Carmen's Restaurant in Agana (tel. 472-7283).  The restaurant is lively, colorful, and full of energy. Carmen's has friendly staff, live music on Thursday nights.

Carmen's serve mole over an onion and bell pepper enchilada. Please know that this has meat stock in it.

I just got an update to the low down on Carmen's menu. The chips are cooked in oil now. The mexican rice has meat stock in it and the beans have cheese throughout. What I find to be a bit disheartening is that under a lot of their menu items they give the option for "vegetarian" however these dishes contain the rice which has meat stock in it...apparently they don't understand what vegetarian means. Even more thumbs down!! It looks like the only item that can be eaten is the ala carte Tacos just get without the sour cream. Everything else has rice & beans in it. BOOO!!
