Minimalist Dishes from Chatan Ke Okinawan Restaurant

With its bright purple banners, it is hard to miss the new Okinawan restaurant on Guam called Chatan Ke. It is located on Marine Drive in Upper Tumon Across from St. John's School.

The restaurant is small but very Japanese in etiquette and decor with bar seating, table seating, and booths. We decided to sit in a private booth where we removed our shoes before sitting.

As usual, vegan options were very limited when eating out. They offered us vegan  roe consisting of a type of seaweed (Caulerpa racemosa) in ponzu (soy with citrus) sauce and deep fried sweet potato croquettes. Both of these side dishes were pricey and barely enough for one person.

Upon asking the chef for recommendations on what s/he could whip up, no further recommendations were made, and we were told they would not alter other dishes for us. Not only were they not accommodating to our needs, but we left hungry and with empty wallets.

I am very disappointed in Chatan Ke, and I hope they will reconsider being more accommodating to different dietary needs while offering healthier alternatives to their meat-based menu in the future.
